SYBC a brief history
The story begins with a meeting of interested persons which was convened at the Salutation Hotel Doncaster on the 8th of December 1966. It was decided to call the new organisation South Yorkshire Boat Club and several sites were discussed including Strawberry Island, Stainforth, Bramwith, Sprotborough and Heck.
A final decision favoured Heck and work started in the summer of 1967 with the aid of a second hand dredger which was purchased for £50. At the same time two council prefabs were purchased to become the basis of our club house. With the help of a £2000 loan from Tetleys Brewery a bar was formed.
At the first General Meeting at the Rockingham Arms on 26th April 1968 the then Secretary said in his report, that the club was started with the intention of catering for all interested in boating and none should forget this and let personal differences spoil the harmony of the club.
The very first club trip was arranged to Haddersley Flood Lock in September and the first club visit to the Boat Show in January 1969. Over the years many enjoyable trips have been made with SYBC being ideally situated for access to all the canal networks in the north and midlands and for some the north sea.
